WASHINGTON (AP) — Hillary Clinton is urging union workers to help her achieve a victory today in New York -- one that she says will allow her to "build the future we all deserve." Clinton spoke in Washington to a meeting of the North America's Building Trades Unions on the day of her showdown with Democratic rival Bernie Sanders in New York's primary. She says if elected president she will keep in the Oval Office a cross that was made for her by an iron worker from scrap recovered from Ground Zero.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A federal appeals court has overturned a policy barring a transgender student from using the boys' restrooms at his Virginia high school. A three-judge panel ruled today that the policy is discriminatory. A federal judge had rejected the discrimination claim of student Gavin Grimm, who was born female but identifies as male. Today's ruling establishes legal precedent in the five states in the 4th Circuit, including North Carolina. The state faces a lawsuit challenging a new state law requiring transgender public school students to use the bathroom that corresponds to the sex on their birth certificate.
MANTA, Ecuador (AP) — Ecuador's foreign minister says at least nine foreigners are among the 413 dead from the country's earthquake. And that doesn't include an American citizen who the State Department says was also killed. The Ecuadorean official says the list of foreigners is likely to grow longer because the epicenter of the quake is in an area of laid-back, pristine beaches popular with foreign tourists and expats.
DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — A Syrian opposition coalition says President Bashar Assad's government is responsible for airstrikes on rebel-held towns that the opposition says killed 44 civilians today. A spokesman for the coalition says the attacks validate the decision by the opposition to suspend its participation in peace talks with the government in Geneva.
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — An assistant professor who was mauled by a bear while teaching a mountaineering course in southeast Alaska is in critical condition. A spokesman at an Anchorage hospital says Forest Wagner is in the intensive care unit today, a day after the attack. A University of Alaska Southeast spokeswoman says Wagner was with a group of 12 students on Mount Emmerich near Haines, Alaska, when he was attacked by a sow with two cubs. No students were hurt. A student hiked down the mountain to get cellphone reception and call for help.
