PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and local advocates have filed a complaint alleging the Providence School District doesn't provide adequate services to English language learners.
RI Legal Services and the ACLU filed the complaint Friday with the state Department of Education.
The complaint alleges families of students who aren't native English speakers aren't advised of their educational rights in their native language, schools force parents to waive their children's rights to specialized English instruction in order for them to be placed in special education and the school district doesn't meet state standards for specialized English instruction.
The complaint asks the Education Department to issue an order addressing these concerns.
Chris Hunter, a school department spokesman, told WPRI-TV the city doesn't comment on pending litigation.
