MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Defense Secretary Ash Carter is in the Philippines, where he's revealed that American ships have started conducting joint patrols with the Philippines in the South China Sea. Carter also announced that the U.S. will be keeping nearly 300 troops in the Philippines through the end of the month. It's part of a military build-up sure to inflame tensions with China.

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia is rejecting complaints by U.S. officials who say Russian attack planes buzzed dangerously close to a U.S. Navy destroyer in the Baltic Sea earlier this week. A spokesman for the Russian defense ministry says the pilots of Russian Su-24 jets saw the ship and turned back "while using all measures of precaution."

BEIRUT (AP) — A Turkish news agency says a U.S.-led coalition has been targeting Islamic State militants in Syrian villages near the border with Turkey. Meanwhile, Syrian activists and state media are reporting an exchange of shelling in the northern city of Aleppo on the second day of the new round of peace talks in Geneva.

MULTAN, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani police say six policemen were killed and 24 were captured during a police raid on a criminal gang's hideout in eastern Punjab province this week. A police spokeswoman tells reporters that the bodies of the policemen have been retrieved and that security forces are searching for the captured officers.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court will be taking up a legal dispute next week that could affect millions of people who are in the United States illegally. The court will weigh the fate of Obama administration programs that could shield roughly 4 million people from deportation and grant them the right to hold a job.
