SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Republican strategist Karl Rove is appearing with Utah Gov. Gary Herbert in Salt Lake City Wednesday as part of the GOP governor's re-election bid.
The governor and Rove will speak to Republican state delegates during an event at the Vivint Smart Home Arena on Wednesday evening.
The state delegates are registered Republicans who have been selected by GOP voters and will gather on April 23 to pick the party's candidate for governor.
Herbert is being challenged for the GOP nomination this year by Jonathan Johnson, the chairman of the board at Overstock.com.
Rove told reporters ahead of the evening event Wednesday that he thinks Herbert has been a strong, budget-minded leader who has stood up for state's rights and steered the state to a strong economy.
