LAS VEGAS (AP) — The University of Nevada-Las Vegas will pay graduate assistant instructors a little more money in what administrators say is a step toward top-tier status.
The Las Vegas Sun reports (http://bit.ly/1qmJsn0 ) that the university is boosting doctoral graduate assistants' nine-month stipends to the national average for their discipline, the most significant increase to the assistants' pay in years.
National averages range from as low as $15,000 in most fine arts programs to more than $20,000 in areas like criminal justice and nursing. Previously, most doctoral graduate assistants had a flat stipend of $13,000.
Master's students aren't included in the raise, with the exception of those in the fine arts programs. Master's graduate assistants currently make about $10,000.
About 960 graduate assistants work at UNLV and approximately half are doctoral students.
