WASHINGTON (AP) — There's been persistent speculation that a contested Republican convention this summer could end with the party's presidential nomination in the hands of someone who wasn't even running this year -- like House Speaker Paul Ryan. But Ryan today is hoping to put an end to that speculation. He has scheduled an announcement at party headquarters in Washington that he is definitively ruling out a presidential bid this year. He told a Milwaukee radio station (WISN) earlier today that the nominee should be "someone who actually wants to be president or is running for president."
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Several more groups are canceling planned conventions or gatherings in North Carolina because of a state law limiting protections for lesbians, gays and transgender people. A spokeswoman for the Greater Raleigh Convention & Visitors Bureau says that five groups totaling about 1,000 attendees have already canceled. She says the canceled events would have brought $730,000 to the area.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — More than a dozen Democratic state lawmakers in Mississippi are calling for repeal of an incoming law that will let workers cite religious beliefs to deny services to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Several states and cities have banned travel to Mississippi, saying the bill promotes discrimination. But the Republican who chairs the state House Rules Committee says it's "not very likely" that the panel will consider a repeal.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New surveillance video from the night former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot and killed appears to show Smith's vehicle bumping a vehicle possibly driven by the man accused of shooting him Saturday night. The video was posted by local television stations (WVUE and WDSU). They say it comes from businesses along the route where Smith was driving in the minutes leading up to the deadly shooting. The video shows a Mercedes SUV bumping a Hummer from behind. As the Hummer pulls to the side, the Mercedes goes around it and drives off.
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The rocket that made a historic landing at sea last week is back at its home port. SpaceX's recovered 15-story booster, still standing tall on its floating platform, pulled into Florida's Port Canaveral before dawn today. The company plans to test-fire the engines 10 times. If everything looks good, the booster could be used again on another mission as early as June. SpaceX is the first company to land and recover a rocket at sea.
