GENOA, Italy (AP) — Italy reserve goalkeeper Mattia Perin will miss the European Championship after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Genoa.

Perin, who was a member of Italy's World Cup squad in 2014, has been called up to the Italy squad 17 times but has only made one appearance.

Perin injured his right knee in a clash with teammate Ezequiel Munoz in the first half of Saturday's 1-0 win at Sassuolo, but played on, making several decisive saves.

However, tests revealed the injury is more serious than first thought and Perin will undergo surgery on Wednesday.

Perin's unavailability for Euro 2016 could mean a call-up for AC Milan's 17-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
