SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The official cleared of wrongdoing in bringing the Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City in 2002 is the recipient of what some call an overdue honor.

Maverick, Inc. CEO Tom Welch received the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation Distinguished Service Award on Tuesday.

The Deseret News reported he was nominated by foundation board member and former University of Utah basketball star Ken Gardner. The vote was unanimous.

The bribery case against the former head of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee was dismissed in 2003 due to lack of evidence.

Welch told KUTV-TV he isn't bitter about the scandal, and that he sees the impact of the Olympics in increased tourism and hotels.

He said he worked on the Olympics bid committee to make a difference, not for the recognition.
