SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah has had recent success with junior college transfer athletes making an immediate impact to the team. That success may continue with the verbal commitment of a former Salt Lake Community College forward.

Tyler Rawson, a 6-foot-10 forward, tweeted out Monday that he would be continuing his basketball career at the University of Utah:

Blessed to announce my career will be continued at Utah University. #Committed#HumbleAndHungrypic.twitter.com/1Wen4teRz6 — Tyler Rawson (@afhoopster) March 28, 2016

Rawson is from American Fork and was the Bruins’ leading scorer this season in their NJCAA championship run. Rawson started in 35 of the team’s 39 games this season and averaged 15.9 points on 54.3 percent shooting and 8.3 rebounds per game. Rawson made 31 3-pointers, shooting 36.5 percent from behind the arc.

Rawson will help Utah’s frontcourt depth as sophomore Jakob Poeltl is expected to declare for the NBA draft later this month. Rawson will likely be competing for the power forward position with Jayce Johnson likely securing the starting center role, but could give Utah some versatility in its lineup variations.

Utah has seen immediate success most notably with Delon Wright and Lorenzo Bonam, but role players Gabe Bealer and Chris Reyes have been valuable assets to the lineup and depth for the program.
