ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) — People who want to dispose of medications can do so this week at two locations in Rocky Mount.

The Rocky Mount Telegram reports (http://bit.ly/1LBxdx0) that Operation Medicine Drop will be held Wednesday in the police station parking lot and at Covenant Homes.

The events are part of a national effort to safely dispose of over-the-counter medications as well as prescription medicines.

During the collection event last March, officers collected nearly 80,000 medications, including 3,500 controlled substances. Since 1999, more than 4,500 people have died in the United States from prescription drug poisoning.

Medications also can be dropped off for disposal five days a week at the Rocky Mount Police Department.
