LAS VEGAS (AP) — A fire broke out on the roof of a new IKEA store in Las Vegas. Fire officials say the fire was reported at the yet-to-open store around 12:15 p.m. yesterday. Clark County Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Buchanan says crews reported smoke and flames on the roof. Firefighters got the blaze, which started in an air condition unit, out within 30 minutes. No injuries were reported. Buchanan did not give an estimate of the damages.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland was the lone dissenting judge in a federal appeals court case involving a proposed nuclear waste site at Yucca Mountain. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Merrick Garland was the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals chief judge for the District of Columbia when he dissented in a 2-1 ruling, saying money available to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was insufficient. Yucca Mountain was proposed more than 30 years ago as a place to bury the nation's nuclear waste. Some disagree the project can't be revived.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police say an elderly woman died after her husband accidentally hit her with his car at their Las Vegas home. Authorities say it happened inside the garage of their home just before 10 a.m. Friday. According to investigators, 87-year-old William Kreger was trying to back out his Chevrolet Equinox when the car went forward instead. They say his 81-year-old wife was standing in the garage and ended up pinned between a wall and the vehicle. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — A 23-year-old man is accused of killing his elderly roommate and injuring another inside their North Las Vegas home. Police say Sean Szymborksi was taken into custody Friday and faces multiple charges including first-degree murder. Officers responded to a domestic disturbance at the home around 11:40 a.m. They found a 55-year-old man who was pronounced dead. They also found a 71-year-old man who was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
