WASHINGTON (AP) — It's another defiant move by North Korea. According to officials in Seoul and in Washington, the North ignored U.N. resolutions by firing a medium-range ballistic missile into the sea today. The launch came days after North Korea's leader ordered weapons tests as part of his country's pursuit of a long-range missile that could reach the U.S. mainland. A senior U.S. defense official says it appears to have been fired from a mobile launcher.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The leader of the Afghan Taliban is calling on followers to end divisions and rally behind him in the fight against the Kabul government. Mullah Akhtar Mansoor claims the Taliban are winning the war and are "in a better state" than ever. The message, distributed to media, comes amid a government offensive against the Taliban.

NEW YORK (AP) — A law enforcement official says New York City police and the FBI are investigating a threatening letter sent to the Manhattan apartment of Donald Trump's son, Eric. The official says the envelope contained a suspicious white powder and a threatening letter. There were no injuries and the official said preliminary tests indicated that the white substance was not hazardous.

CLEVELAND (AP) — An emergency medical services supervisor has been fired for a Facebook post saying he was glad a 12-year-old black boy who'd been fatally shot by a white Cleveland officer was dead. The city today confirmed the termination of EMS Capt. Jamie Marquardt. The post on Marquardt's Facebook page said he wished he'd had the chance to have shot what the post called "the little criminal." A follow-up post blamed someone who'd picked up his phone for the original post.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are again starting the day higher, setting the market up to extend its winning streak to a fifth week. Financial stocks are leading the way today, after JP Morgan Chase and Bank of America announced plans to buy back their own shares. The price of oil rose again, lifting energy stocks.
