RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Former North Carolina State football player Eric Leak is under investigation by the federal government on suspicion of Medicaid fraud.
Multiple media outlets reported that documents prepared by the IRS and filed in U.S. District Court in Durham state that Leak obtained nearly $9 million from Medicaid for his mental health business between 2012 and 2014 and moved more than $200,000 to his sports management company.
Four vehicles connected to Leak and his wife were included in a seizure warrant, according to court documents.
The documents show a 2013 Porsche Panamera worth more than $137,000 was purchased for former N.C. State basketball player C.J. Leslie.
Leak, 37, played wide receiver and running back for N.C. State from 1997 to 2000.
He was in trouble with the NCAA in 2011 for providing Leslie with $410 of improper benefits.
The school had sent the Leaks a disassociation letter in 2011 for providing improper benefits to two former basketball players, Leslie and Tracy Smith. The school referred concerns about him in 2012 to the North Carolina Secretary of State's office after he spoke with ex-Wolfpack football player David Amerson.
The secretary of state's office investigates improper sports agent activities.
N.C. State banned Leak from campus in 2013 to try to prevent improper contact with athletes.
Leak said in 2013 he was not a sports agent, but a life coach.
Leak did not talk to reporters at one of his homes Wednesday where SBI and secretary of state agents removed at least four computer hard drives.
He has not been charged with any crimes.
