DOVER, Del. (AP) — Delaware State University has cut 23 academic programs to invest in higher-growing areas expected to bring in more students and revenue.
The News Journal of Wilmington (http://delonline.us/21rul7B ) reports that the university board voted in January to cut the majors starting in the fall. The majors represent about a quarter of the university's offerings.
The shakeup has cut education specialties in the sciences, world languages and special education. University president Harry L. Williams says the school will reallocate resources to respond to student demand.
The cuts are expected to save DSU about $900,000 by 2020. The money will go toward 19 other programs including mass communication, applied chemistry and business administration.
The cuts will only apply to future students. Current students will be able to graduate with their declared majors.
