RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada justice of the peace has cut the bail from $1.3 million to $385,000 for a 26-year-old Elko County man who's been in jail since he was arrested last weekend with a cache of weapons and explosive devices used to manufacture bombs. The judge ordered the appointment of a public defender yesterday during Thomas Mooney's initial appearance in Elko Justice Court on a 16-count criminal complaint. Acting Undersheriff Kevin McKinney says they're investigating whether Mooney may have any ties to extremist or terrorist groups.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — An aging former pro boxer has been sentenced to 15 years in Nevada state prison in a long-unsolved case stemming from the kidnapping for ransom, rape and murder of an 18-year-old high school cheerleader in Las Vegas in 1981. Willie Lee Shannon said nothing during sentencing Thursday in a courtroom full of family members and supporters wearing yellow "Justice 4 Jamey" T-shirts to honor victim Jamey Walker. Shannon, now 64, pleaded an equivalent of no contest in January to second-degree murder. Police linked him by underwear DNA evidence to the slaying.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Police say a man with a rifle who was shot and killed by police called 911 and acted erratically near businesses off a highway exit north of Reno. Police Lt. William Rulla told the Reno Gazette-Journal it took about an hour to find the man after his call about 8:15 p.m. Thursday. The man said he had a gun near U.S. 395 and Lemmon Drive. Rulla says the nearby Amazon warehouse was locked down and SWAT officers and a police helicopter went to the scene. A sheriff's deputy found the man about 9:15 p.m.

PHOENIX (AP) — Federal forecasters say a warm, dry February has increased the chances that Lake Mead will have a water shortage by 2018. The Arizona Republic reports that El Nino brought a snowy winter to the Rocky Mountains, but things dried up in February. The Colorado Basin River Forecast Center projects that Lake Powell will hold only 80 percent of its long-term average amount of water this spring. Lake Powell gathers most of the water that ultimately flows to Lake Mead.
