The beautiful pink flowering trees that are seen blooming right now are the silk trees. The scientific name is Albizzia julibrissin and it is also known as a Mimosa tree. They are attractive but have some problems with cold hardiness as they are a zone six plant. They are not suitable for the higher mountain valleys because they winterkill in colder winter even in Salt Lake City. They are susceptible to verticillium wilt and a few other problems.
Hardiness Zones: 6 to 9 Height: 30 ft Spread: 30 ft Form: spreading Type: deciduous tree Annual Growth Rate: more than 18 inches Flowers: Pink
Comments: Mimosa is grown for its pink flowers that appear in the summer. The tree is not suitable for northern gardens. Mimosa is a problem prone plant that requires more care than more desirable species.
Cultivars: 'Ernest Wilson' - More cold tolerant than the species.
