Jewel Sumner completes perfect season with 3A girls title

HAMMOND, LA. (AP) — Relying on a fourth-quarter comeback, Jewel Sumner captured the school's first-ever state championship in girls basketball with a 60-50 win over Parkview Baptist in the 2016 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 3A state championship game on Saturday night at the University Center in Hammond.

Diamond Brooks led Jewel Sumner with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Bre'Ashlee Jones had 12 points and 13 rebounds, Kiara Williams had 11 and Amy Brumfield added 10 points.

The win completes a perfect 36-0 season for the Cowgirls.

Down 34-24 with 3:16 to go in the third quarter, Jewel Sumner went on a 15-4 run which extended into the fourth quarter to take a 39-38 advantage.

Trailing the entire first half, Parkview Baptist opened the second half on a 14-0 run to take a 34-22 lead with 3:49 to go in the third quarter.

Having never made it past the second round of the playoffs until this season, Parkview Baptist finishes its season 25-11.

The Eagles were led by Skyler Goodwin's 17 points. Leah Collins had 14 points and 16 rebounds.
