WASHINGTON (AP) — Howard University's iconic Founders Library has been named a national treasure.
The Washington Post reports (http://wapo.st/1SdITHh) the National Trust for Historic Preservation made the announcement Monday.
The nonprofit organization is partnering with the school to develop a renovation strategy to repurpose the library's underused spaces and add research technology while ensuring the preservation of the historic building's character.
Trust spokesman Brent Leggs says he envisions it'll take anywhere from two to three years to come up with a plan and raise the money to carry it out.
Howard will have to contribute to the project's funding, which it hopes to secure through a fundraising campaign tied to its 150th anniversary next year.
Founders opened in 1939 as the largest and most extensive research facility at a historically black university.
