PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) — Parents in the Prescott area will be able to send their kindergarteners to school all day at no extra cost next year.
The Daily Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1WJ5wT8 ) that the Prescott Unified School District last week moved to make all-day kindergarten free for the 2016-17 school year.
Currently the district offers full-day classes on a tuition basis, where the district covers the cost of morning classes and kids can continue to receive instruction for $1,750 annually. A system that critics say disproportionally affects low-income students who could most benefit from all-day instruction.
Chief Financial Officer Kevin Dickerson says the new system will cost the district about $230,000 more annually than the current program.
