MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria wants to stop leading the majors in managerial changes.
Don Mattingly takes over this season as the Marlins' seventh manager since June 2010. Loria told team president David Samson and president of baseball operations Michael Hill the managerial hire will be their last, Samson said Saturday.
"He wasn't laughing when he said it," Samson said.
The Marlins haven't had a winning season since 2009 and haven't been to the playoffs since 2003, the second-longest drought in the majors behind Seattle.
Lots of losing and impetuous managerial moves have helped make Loria an unpopular owner. But Samson said he and Hill deserve considerable blame for "things that have gone wrong."
The Marlins went 71-91 last year under managers Mike Redmond and Dan Jennings.
