JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas State University in Jonesboro is locked down after armed men were reportedly seen on campus. The university sent an emergency alert this afternoon saying the men were seen near the student union. A later message said three men wearing all black were seen and that the lockdown remains in effect until further notice.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia means next month's Supreme Court arguments over contraceptives, religious liberty and President Barack Obama's health care law appear more likely to favor the administration. Without Scalia's vote, a case that conservatives might have won 5-4 could end in a 4-4 tie, leaving in place the conflicting decisions of lower courts. Scalia died yesterday at age 79.
FREDERICKSBURG, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say more than 70 people were treated following yesterday's huge pileup on a central Pennsylvania interstate that killed three people. State police say the crash on Interstate 78 during a snow squall involved 64 vehicles, including a dozen commercial vehicles such as tractor-trailers and box trucks. A total of 73 people were taken for treatment at 11 hospitals. At least one person remains in critical condition.
MERCED, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say two men died over the weekend in a car crash that set off a series of collisions on a foggy Central California highway. The California Highway Patrol says two passengers were killed and the driver had major injuries when a pickup ran into the back of a milk truck yesterday before being hit by two other cars on Highway 59. A second crash was reported in the same area as officers were responding to the first call. A short time later, a third and fourth collision were reported. In all, 16 cars were involved.
SMITHFIELD, Utah (AP) — Every girl at a Utah high school got flowers for Valentine's Day thanks to the generosity of a male classmate. Seventeen-year-old Hayden Godfrey spent $450 on 900 carnations, ensuring that all 834 females at Sky View High School in Smithfield would get one. He worked as a cook and dishwasher at various fast food restaurants to save up enough money. The senior told The Herald Journal of Logan that many girls feel depressed if they don't get anything on Feb. 14.
