OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — University of Mississippi volleyball player Ty Laporte has been killed in a two-car accident a few miles south of the Tennessee state line.

Mississippi Highway Patrol Master Sgt. Ray Hall said Friday that the 23-year-old Laporte died Thursday night in Benton County, Mississippi, about 50 miles north of Oxford.

Hall says it appears Laporte pulled into the path of an 18-wheeler driven by 63-year-old Rickey Kirkpatrick of Rainsville, Alabama. The wreck happened at the intersection of Mississippi Highway 7 and U.S. Highway 72, and it remains under investigation. Hall says no charges were filed.

Laporte was from Irmo, South Carolina.

The Ole Miss athletics website says the middle blocker was in the top 10 in the Southeastern Conference in hitting percentage during the 2015 season.
