CRANS MONTANA, Switzerland (AP) — Challenging Lindsey Vonn for the overall World Cup title, Lara Gut of Switzerland led the opening training session on Thursday for a World Cup downhill.
On a course shortened due to concerns over a jump, Gut beat Ilke Stuhec of Slovenia by 0.33 seconds, with Sofia Goggia of Italy third, 0.34 back.
Vonn was only 16th, nearly a full second behind.
In the overall, Vonn leads Gut on points by 1,060 to 973.
Another training session is scheduled for Friday with the downhill on Saturday, an Alpine combined event on Sunday and a slalom on Monday that was moved from Maribor, Slovenia.
