BYU's Jorgensen Named to Ted Hendricks Watch List

PROVO, Utah (July 24, 2008) - As the preseason accolades continue to roll in for the Cougars, junior Jan Jorgensen has been named a candidate for the 2008 Ted Hendricks Award. Named in honor of college football's first three-time first-team All-American, this honor is awarded annually to the premier defensive end in the country.

Jorgensen, who is also a candidate for the Rotary Lombardi Award, the Lott Trophy and All-America honors, has started 26 straight games at defensive end. He earned both Academic All-Mountain West Conference and All-Mountain West Conference first-team honors last season.

The 6-foot-3, 260-pound native of Helper, Utah led the MWC and ranked 12th nationally with 20 tackles for a combined loss of 115 yards. He also led the Mountain West and ranked among the nation's top-10 in sacks, recording 14 on the season for a combined loss of over 90 yards. Jorgensen was part of a defensive unit that allowed only one 100-yard rusher last season.

Previous recipients of the Hendricks Award include Terrell Suggs (Arizona State), David Pollack (Georgia), Elvis Dumervil (Louisville), LaMarr Woodley (Michigan) and Chris Long (Virginia).

Members of the national media, head coaches, professional scouts and former winners are included in the Award's voting committee. The winner will be announced on Dec. 10.

Earlier this week, Jorgensen was selected by the league's media as a preseason first-team All-Mountain West Conference performer.
