WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — The family of a Cedar Falls toddler who died after having his tonsils removed is suing two hospitals and doctors.

Jenelle and Brigham Shamrell filed a lawsuit Jan. 8 against Covenant Medical Center, Sartori Hospital, and emergency room doctors Gary Beetner and Hameed Kahn, as well as the doctors' employers.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1QyatOM ) the couple took 2-year-old Caleb Shamrell to Sartori's emergency room as he bled from the mouth hours after his tonsillectomy at Covenant in December 2014.

The parents allege doctors failed to determine the child's large amount of blood loss. The suit alleges negligence for failing to administer proper care and for using excessive anesthesia and electroshocks.

The defendants say their actions weren't behind the child's injuries and a pre-existing condition or a subsequently occurring medical condition might've been responsible.
