...plus more roster notes, and an interesting BYU-related national tidbit.

If there's one thing I'm finding, it's that my trvia questions are being answered too easily, and too quickly. But kudos once again to "Bronco4Prez" for nailing the answer to yesterday's question; Jim McMahon and Ty Detmer were the only other BYU sophomores to be named first team all-conference QBs, before Max Hall last season.

Today's question:

A BYU duo set a school single-season record last season. Who are the two players involved, and what record did they set together?

I mentioned the other day that Shane Hunter, Travis Uale and Ryan Love were added to the 105-man roster. Here's a little more on each player:

Hunter: 5'11", 226-pound LB from Snow College. Led the WSFL with 11 sacks last season. Named WSFL Defensive Player of the Week one time. He'll be an inside linebacker at BYU.

Uale: 6'0", 185-pound DB from University of Utah (transferred after serving his LDS mission). Scout team standout as a freshman at Utah (redshirt). Will play safety or corner at BYU.

Love: 5'10", 180-pound DB. Redshirted as a RB at BYU last season. Did not play in Spring; will play corner this season.

Correction: a week or so ago, in mentioning some BYU roster moves, I included tight end Braden Brown in a group of recently-added players I designated walk-ons. Clearly I let him slip past me, and he should not have been included in that group, as he was a scholarhsip recruit in 2007. But since he was to have served an LDS mission before enrolling in 2009, his earlier re-appearance caught me off guard, and while his name did cause me to stop for a second, I failed to separate him from that group.

Brown would have to be considered a scholarship player, and it looks as if one would be available, considering the handful of players from the most recent recruiting class who did not make it to Provo.

Watching "Mike and Mike" on ESPN2 this morning, I stumbled upon this story from guest Brent Musberger:

It was March of 1981, and Musberger was in a New York City watering hole with CBS Sports Executive Producer Kevin O'Malley. They were watching a basketball game on TV--the BYU-Notre Dame "Danny Ainge Coast-to-Coast" game. The game was being viewed on a regional network and not being seen nationally. As the dramatic final seconds unfolded, O'Malley remarked to Musberger, "that game has to be on national TV."

Great story. Turns out that later that month, CBS bought the rights to the NCAA Tournament away from NBC, which to that point had only broadcast the Final Four and Championship game on the national network. CBS began broadcasting a much more comprehensive NCAA tournament schedule the following season, implementing a "studio control center" (like its "NFL Today" program) to better cover and provide analysis of multiple games. So, in a way, BYU helped bring about the phenomenon that is now known as "March Madness."
