VIENNA (AP) — The United Nations secretary-general is welcoming implementation of the nuclear deal between Iran and six major powers as "a significant milestone." Ban Ki-moon says the U.N. nuclear agency's certification that Iran has met all of its commitments under the landmark nuclear deal "reflects the good faith effort by all parties to fulfil their agreed commitments."
VIENNA (AP) — President Barack Obama is lifting economic sanctions on Iran. He signed the order after the International Atomic Energy Agency certified that Iran had met its obligations to the nuclear watchdog. The European Union also lifted sanctions. Iran can now recoup some $100 billion in frozen assets and will enjoy huge benefits from new oil, trade and financial opportunities.
VIENNA (AP) — Friends and family of four Americans who were held in Iran are rejoicing over the news they're coming home. Iran as released the four in exchange for seven Iranians held or charged in the United States. One of the Americans is Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian (reh-ZY'-ahn). A fifth American was also released in a move unrelated to the swap.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A 28-year-old Virginia man who was allegedly attempting to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State group and a man accused of helping him are in custody. Joseph Hassan Farrokh was arrested Friday at the Richmond airport. Also arrested was 25-year-old Mahmoud Amin Mohamed Elhassan, who authorities say drove Farrokh to Richmond. The men are from Woodbridge.
HONOLULU (AP) — The high surf that's been hampering rescuers' efforts to locate the victims of a military helicopter accident off Hawaii is going down. Search and rescue efforts are continuing for 12 Marines missing after two Marine Corps transport helicopters crashed off Oahu's north shore late Thursday during a nighttime training mission.
