SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — A 16-year-old Sparks boy has been sentenced to 30 years for fatally stabbing his neighbor.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports (http://on.rgj.com/1JRbO1G) that Carlos Antonio Montoya, who was charged as an adult with second-degree murder, received his sentence Friday in Washoe County Court.
Montoya pleaded guilty in October to killing 36-year-old Brian Marshall.
He must serve a minimum of 12 years before being eligible for parole.
Prosecutors say a 15-year-old Montoya was suspected of stabbing Marshall in the chest in September 2014. Marshall later died at a hospital.
Montoya told investigators that he became angry after Marshall mocked him.
The incident occurred before a change in state law that automatically charges juveniles as adults in murder cases.
Now, juveniles between ages 13 and 16 must be certified as adults in such cases.
