CHISINAU, Moldova (AP) — Moldova's president has designated the country's technology minister to the post of prime minister, a move likely to end a three-month political standoff between the president and Parliament.
President Nicolae Timofti nominated Technology Minister Pavel Filip, formerly a candy factory manager, as Moldova's new premier Friday. He is the third person Timofti has nominated to the post this month.
Parliament is expected to approve Filip, the latest candidate proposed by the pro-European coalition which announced Friday that it had regained a parliamentary majority.
If Parliament doesn't approve a government by Jan. 29, Timofti will dissolve the legislature. Parliament dismissed the previous government in October amid corruption allegations.
Moldova has been locked in political uncertainty since up to $1.5 billion went missing from three banks prior to November 2014 Parliamentary elections.
