MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho (AP) — Idaho Rep. Pete Nielsen of Mountain Home has been charged with poaching an elk in southwest Idaho. The Republican lawmaker has entered a not guilty plea to possessing illegal wildlife. Officials with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game say Nielsen possessed a spiked elk when he could only legally kill an antlerless elk. The 77-year-old Nielsen declined to comment.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — A defense attorney says the father of Eldon Gale Samuel III believed zombies were real and would one day come after the family, and he instilled that fear in his sons. The 16-year-old Samuel is charged with killing his father and younger brother. The Spokesman-Review reported that a defense attorney painted a picture of a dysfunctional and violent family led by a drug addict. Samuel, who is being tried as an adult, was 14 at the time of the killings.

LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — A farm foreman in northern Idaho has been arrested in connection to the death of an 18-year-old laborer who was reported missing during a heat wave last summer. The Lewiston Tribune reports that the 52-year-old man is accused in the death of Ambrose Smartlowit, whose body was found June 9. Preliminary autopsy results show he died of heatstroke.

ST. ANTHONY, Idaho (AP) — A 19-year-old Idaho man has been sentenced to three to 10 years in prison for attacking jailers at Five County Detention Center. The Post Register reports that Colton Copeland has pleaded guilty to two separate attacks on jailers.
