PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Reed College in southeast Portland has received a $500,000 grant from Microsoft that will help the school start a degree program in computer science.

The Oregonian reports (http://goo.gl/8Yu3g4V ) that the private college began planning to raise $5 million for a new computer science degree program about a year and a half ago. School leaders on Tuesday said the fundraising is nearly complete.

The college has received $4.25 million from anonymous donors, in addition to the Microsoft grant.

School officials say Microsoft's senior vice president, Kurt DelBene, is on Reed's board of trustees and helped coordinate the grant.

Although Reed offers computer science courses through its math department, it has never offered an undergraduate major in the discipline.

The college plans to hire two new full-time faculty members in the department.
