AMES, Iowa (AP) — Hillary Clinton is ripping into rival Bernie Sanders, saying the Vermont senator offers unrealistic policies and overstates his anti-establishment credentials. For days, Clinton has cast Sanders as a less forceful advocate for gun control, targeting a 2005 vote he cast that gave immunity to gun manufacturers. She says if Sanders wouldn't combat the National Rifle Association, he couldn't be trusted to take on other special interests. The new assault comes as polls show a tightening race in Iowa.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police say a fifth teen is in custody in the suspected gang rape of an 18-year-old woman at a Brooklyn playground. The 17-year-old is being questioned by detectives. Four other teens, ranging in age from 14 to 17, have already been arrested in the case. They are being held as adults on rape and other charges. Police say the teens approached the woman and her father Thursday and one pulled out a handgun and ordered the father to leave before attacking her.

PARIS (AP) — A leading Jewish authority in the French city of Marseille (mahr-SAY') is calling on fellow Jews to refrain from wearing their traditional skull cap, for now. The request is a safety precaution, following an attack by a teenager with a machete on a Jewish teacher. The attacker said he acted in the name of the Islamic State group. The Jewish leader says he's asking Jews to go without the skull cap "until better days."

FLINT, Mich. (AP) — Volunteers and law officers are knocking on doors in Flint, Michigan, to distribute bottled water, filters and lead test kits to residents in a city that's confronting a water crisis. They're trudging through 3 inches of snow with more falling. The city has a population of about 99,000 with an estimated 30,000 households. Gov. Rick Snyder last week declared a state of emergency because of elevated levels of lead in the city's drinking water.

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says he saw a dead mouse, cold children wearing coats in classrooms and a warped gym floor during a morning tour of some of the city's public schools. More than 20 schools are closed today because of a sick-out by teachers. Some teachers have complained about mold, rodents and other workplace issues -- and the mayor says they have legitimate concerns. The mayor doesn't control the school system but says he can order building improvements. He's promising a plan by tomorrow.
