ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — Roanoke County Schools is seeking input from parents on a proposal to randomly test student athletes for drug use.
The Roanoke Times reports (http://bit.ly/1ONpye1) the idea calls for Roanoke County to implement a drug testing policy similar to the ones operated by Salem and Botetourt schools, which both randomly test student athletes.
School board member Tom McCracken is advocating for the drug testing. He says he's concerned about students being under the influence while playing sports, and therefore being more prone to accidents and injuries.
Superintendent Greg Killough says he wants to get more information and feedback before the district makes a decision regarding the program.
Killough says the district will seek feedback from parents at a meeting to be held 7 p.m. on Jan. 21 at Northside High School.
