PROVO, Utah (AP) — The Mormon Church has unveiled its 150th temple — a renovated historical tabernacle in Provo that nearly burned down in 2010. The temple's red brick exterior and backstory are unique, but the interior features the same staples that make such buildings deeply sacred places for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The opening comes five years after the church nearly burned down in a fire that began in the attic and that investigators determined was largely caused by human error.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert is declaring January radon action month. Herbert says he wants to bring attention to the state's unique radon gas risk. He says that Utah has the highest rate of homes with radon gas exposure. The governor's office says one in every three homes have radon gas exposure.
LAYTON, Utah (AP) — Authorities say a teenage girl and man in wheelchair were hit and killed by cars in separate incidents in Layton. The Standard-Examiner in Ogden reports that police say 17-year-old BaiLee DiBernardo was crossing the road in a crosswalk when she was hit by a pickup truck. The crash happened about 30 minutes after 42-year-old Adam Brimhall was hit and killed as he crossed the road in his wheelchair.
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Federal wildlife officials are considering new protections for a small, fanged predator that lives in remote, old-growth forests in the Northern Rockies. Wildlife advocates say the Northern Rockies fisher historically occupied a Western range that stretched across parts Washington, Utah, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. The cat-like animals are now limited to an area along the Montana-Idaho border.
