WASHINGTON (AP) — A formerly homeless veteran from Las Vegas will sit in first lady Michelle Obama's visitor box during the State of the Union address tomorrow night. Cynthia Dias served during the Vietnam War. She attributes her years of homelessness to post-traumatic stress disorder. The Obama administration is highlighting a challenge that the first lady has issued for local leaders to do more to reduce veteran homelessness.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A former Clark County elected official faces a judge today on a drunken driving charge following his arrest last month in Las Vegas. Tom Collins was arrested late on Dec. 11 in a vehicle while leaving the National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas & Mack Center. The 65-year-old former Democratic state lawmaker and Clark County commissioner lives in North Las Vegas. His legal name is Clarence Weldon Collins Jr.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — UNLV basketball coach Dave Rice has resigned in the middle of his fifth season after the struggling Runnin' Rebels opened Mountain West Conference play with three straight losses. Rebels athletic director Tina Kunzer-Murphy said last night associate head coach Todd Simon will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities have identified a motorcyclist who died after his bike overturned on a Las Vegas road. KSNV-TV reports the Clark County coroner's office says 26-year-old Maurice Walker died of blunt force injuries caused by the accident on Saturday.
