SALT LAKE CITY — Former Utah All-American Morgan Scalley now has his dream job as the defensive coordinator at the school he loves.
Waiting for the chance to be the top defensive coach at his alma mater paid off in a big way for the former Utah safety from 2001-04.
"I've been surrounded by good people, and I'm grateful for parents that raised me not to complain about things that don't happen — I just work," Scalley said. "When it didn't happen last year, it was tough. But I love John (Pease), and it was tough this go-around when I was hired to where I wish I had more time with the guy."
Learning under Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham has its advantages, too.
"Kyle's been in this profession a long time, and I think he knows what it takes to become a coordinator and seasoned in the profession," Scalley said. "He knows what it takes to command a defense. I'm just grateful that he feels that I'm ready."
He's also thrilled that his first chance comes at his alma mater, and the school that gave his father a chance at college football.
"The drum-and-feather means something to me; we have a past together," Scalley said. "When you go into a kid's home and say you love the university, it means something.
"My entire family went to the U., and I pray that I never leave."
