PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Authorities in Philadelphia continue to investigate the ambush shooting of an officer sitting in his patrol car. Police say hours later, a suspect confessed to wounding the officer and told investigators he was following Allah, and had pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State group. Officer Jesse Hartnett is hospitalized in stable condition.

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City police officer was shot in the ankle early today during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect allegedly involved in a large fight in the Bronx. Police Commissioner William Bratton says 25-year-old Officer Sherrod Stuart was wounded on his fourth anniversary with the department. The suspect is reported in serious condition.

HURGHADA, Egypt (AP) — A local Islamic State affiliate in Egypt has claimed responsibility for an attack that killed two policemen in the country's Giza province. However, the IS group claims it killed more than two officers, but did not give an exact number.

BERLIN (AP) — The party of German Chancellor Angela Merkel is proposing stricter laws regulating asylum seekers. A string of New Year's Eve sexual assaults and robberies in the German city of Cologne is being blamed largely on foreigners. Today, several hundred people gathered in front of Cologne cathedral to protest sexual violence.

BEIJING (AP) — The record-breaking "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has opened in China. The new "Star Wars" movie is the highest ever grossing film in the North American market. But it's far from certain to draw in enough Chinese movie-goers to knock off "Avatar" as the world's all-time biggest grossing movie. For one thing, not many Chinese are familiar with "Star Wars" to begin with.
