COLOGNE, Germany (AP) — Several hundred people have gathered in front of Cologne cathedral in Germany to protest sexual violence and to advocate for women's rights. The protest follows reports of attacks on women by groups of men described by police as predominantly Arab or North African in origin. The attacks have fueled calls for tighter controls on asylum seekers in Germany.
PARIS (AP) — Mosques all over France are taking part in a dialogue weekend. They're opening up to the public as the country marks one year since radical jihadists attacked a satirical newspaper and Jewish supermarket in Paris, killing 17 people. The goal is to highlight the differences between jihadism and moderate, peace-loving Islam.
DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Activists in Syria are reporting that an airstrike on a prison run by an al-Qaida affiliate has killed dozens. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 39 people were killed. Another activist group puts the death toll at 51. Conflicting figures are common in the aftermath of airstrikes in Syria.
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican authorities say recaptured drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman will be spending time at the same maximum-security prison he escaped from. Guzman was captured by Mexican marines early Friday in a coastal city. He literally walked out of prison last July using an elaborate tunnel leading to his shower stall.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Even though the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are extremely slim, the odds that somebody will win are growing. Officials expect about 65 percent of the possible number combinations to have been bought for tonight's drawing. The jackpot now stands at $800 million. But if nobody wins, it could soar past $1 billion for the next drawing.
