SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea is responding to North Korea's latest nuclear test with words. Seoul says it will resume cross-border propaganda broadcasts on Friday. The loudspeaker broadcasts are meant to raise questions about the infallibility of the ruling Kim family, and Pyongyang has said it considers them an act of war. Meanwhile, South Korea has also begun talks with the U.S. that could see the arrival of nuclear-powered U.S. aircraft and submarines to the Korean Peninsula.
PARIS (AP) — French President Francois Hollande (frahn-SWAH' oh-LAWND') is making an address to police today, a year after Islamic extremists gunned down 11 members of Charlie Hebdo's staff and a Muslim policeman outside the satirical newspaper's Paris offices. Following last January's attack on Charlie Hebdo, an accomplice shot a policewoman to death, then stormed a kosher supermarket, killing four hostages. All three gunmen were eventually killed. France remains on high alert since an even deadlier attack in November.
BURNS, Ore. (AP) — The sheriff of Oregon's Harney County says it's time for the two dozen armed people occupying the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to "pick up and go home." The comment drew cheers at a packed community meeting in eastern Oregon's high desert Wednesday evening. Schools in the area have been closed over safety concerns following the seizure of the refuge on Saturday. The group's leader says members will leave when there's a plan in place to turn over federal lands to locals.
BURIEN, Wash. (AP) — Washington's Democratic governor is taking steps aimed at curbing gun violence. Gov. Jay Inslee has signed an executive order to improve data-sharing among government agencies and also launch a new public health campaign on suicide prevention. In announcing the moves, Inslee praised President Barack Obama's executive actions on guns earlier this week and criticized the lack of action by Congress.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee high school has canceled its basketball season after three players were charged with raping a teammate in an apparent hazing incident. The Hamilton County Schools superintendent says the move is intended to allow investigators to do their jobs without interference, not to punish the rest of the Ooltewah (OOL'-teh-wah) High School team. He also says law enforcement officials have to date found no evidence that any of the coaching staff acted improperly.
