SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — It hasn't been confirmed by the U.S., but North Korea says it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb. The announcement came after seismic activity was detected in the region. A television anchor read a statement on state TV that said North Korea had tested a "miniaturized" hydrogen bomb, elevating the country's "nuclear might to the next level" in defending itself against the U.S. and other enemies.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Saying Congress is being held hostage by gun rights groups, President Barack Obama has unveiled a 10-point plan he says will help keep guns from those who shouldn't have them. One goal is to plug loopholes that allow purchases of firearms at gun shows and online without background checks. The effort is being widely condemned by GOP lawmakers and Republican presidential candidates.
BURNS, Ore. (AP) — One of the armed, anti-government activists holed up at a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon says he believes he and four other people have had warrants issued for their arrest. But Arizona rancher LaVoy Finchum is offering no details. Finchum, armed with a rifle, says he'll stay at the entrance of the remote facility. The FBI has said it's looking for a peaceful resolution.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Lawyers say they' been able to temporarily halt the deportation of some of the first Central American families targeted by immigration authorities in recent raids. The Department of Homeland Security has said the immigrants targeted had exhausted their legal remedies before being apprehended. Some of the detainees are at a south Texas facility.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The estimated jackpot for Wednesday night's Powerball drawing has soared to $450 million thanks to strong sales. It will be the largest lottery jackpot in nearly a year. No one has won Powerball's biggest prize since Nov. 4. If there is no winner after Wednesday night's drawing, the prize will keep climbing.
