WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says the goal of the expanded background checks for firearms he is pushing is to save lives. Federal authorities will issue updated guidance that says the government should deem anyone "in the business" of selling guns to be a dealer, regardless of where he or she sells the guns.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say the White House, State Department and key administration officials are working behind the scenes to help lower the tension between Sunni-led Saudi Arabia and Shiite-ruled Iran. Relations soured after the Saudis executed a Shiite cleric. That prompted attacks on two Saudi diplomatic posts.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — One worker at the social service center where there was a terror attack last month says staffers will have to pull themselves together and move on. A memorial was held today for the 14 people killed. Author and pastor Rick Warren urged the employees not to bottle up their grief or become bitter and to accept help from others when they need it.

BEIJING (AP) — Officials say a bus caught fire in northern China on Tuesday, killing 14 people and injuring more than 30. The incident happened in the city of Yinchuan. The cause is still being investigated.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Forecasters say Northern California can expect as much as 15 inches of rain in the next 16 days and about 2 feet of snow in the highest points of the Sierra Nevada. Back-to-back storms are being generated by the El Nino -- a warming system in the Pacific Ocean that alters weather worldwide.
