NEW YORK (AP) — The Dow industrials are already down by about 400 points for 2016 -- and it's only the first trading day of the year. A double dose of unsettling news is rattling Wall Street and stock exchanges around the world today. There are new signs of weakness in China's economy. And the escalating tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran could bring a spike in oil prices.
MOSCOW (AP) — A Russian state news agency is citing a senior diplomat as saying that Moscow is ready to act as a mediator in the escalating conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Allies of Saudi Arabia have been following that country's lead today and scaling back their diplomatic ties to Iran. This, after Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran were ransacked -- in reaction to the Saudi execution of a prominent opposition Shiite cleric.
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — The head of the social service center in San Bernardino, California, where 14 people were killed last month says most workers there are "excited" to be back together today. It's the first day that the facility is open again since the December 2nd shooting attack. Executive Director Lavinia Johnson says she expects all of her staff to be back on the job, but that some will be feeling some anxiety. Guards checked IDs as employees filed back into the offices today.
LAKE WORTH, Fla. (AP) — More than 20 people are hurt after a train hit a garbage truck that was stuck on the tracks this morning in Florida's Palm Beach County. A fire captain tells the Palm Beach Post that none of the victims was seriously hurt in the crash in Lake Worth. Officials say the truck's driver escaped the disabled vehicle just before the crash.
ALLENVILLE, Mo. (AP) — The tiny southeast Missouri town of Allenville remains isolated by floods, but residents are feeling better about their plight. The Mississippi River reached a record level in the area on Friday, and the river water continues to encircle the roughly 45 homes in Allenville, where residents are getting around by boat. But the county emergency management director says the water level is falling. He says levee breaks across the river in Illinois lowered the water level enough to keep most of Allenville's homes dry.
