DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A 63-story luxury hotel engulfed in flames didn't stop a massive New Year's fireworks display in Dubai. Tens of thousands of people whistled and cheered at the pyrotechnics. Just minutes before the fireworks began, large explosions could be heard from inside the burning building. Other blasts followed. It's not clear what caused them.
BERLIN (AP) — Police in Munich have asked people to stay away from the city's main train station as well as a second station. The authorities cited a "serious, imminent threat" of a terror attack on New Year's Eve. Despite the police statement, thousands of people were on the streets of Munich at midnight to welcome the New Year with fireworks.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Some water-logged Midwestern communities are seeing some relief as floodwaters begin to recede. The Mississippi River neared record levels at many places, and a tributary, the Meramec River, surged 4 feet beyond previous records before finally starting to fall. Twenty deaths in the region have been blamed on recent flooding.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Investigators say the mother of a fugitive Texas teen known for using an "affluenza" defense in a fatal drunken-driving accident will likely remain jailed for several days in Los Angeles. Tonya Couch was deported from Mexico after she and her 18-year-old son, Ethan, were taken into custody this week in Mexico, where authorities believe the pair had fled in November.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order preventing Arkansas from enforcing new limits on how the abortion pill is administered. The judge issued a 14-day delay in two sections of the law, which was scheduled to go into effect tomorrow, citing possible harm to Planned Parenthood's two Arkansas clinics and their patients.
