GARLAND, Texas (AP) — Weather experts say a weekend tornado that killed eight people in Garland, Texas, had winds up to more than 200 mph. It was just one of many deadly storms over the past several days that killed 43 people in several states. In the Dallas area, as many as 1,450 homes were damaged or destroyed in some nine tornadoes. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has made disaster declarations for four counties.
VENTURA, Calif. (AP) — A wildfire that threatened homes on Southern California's coast is now 75 percent contained, with full containment expected on Tuesday. The blaze has scorched about 1,230 acres north of Ventura. It started Friday night when high winds caused power lines on an oil field to arc.
MASNAA, Lebanon (AP) — A Lebanese convoy has crossed into Syria to evacuate dozens of opposition fighters and civilians from a border village. The evacuation is part of a U.N.-backed truce deal reached in September for two key Syrian battleground areas that will see the transfer of thousands of Shiite and Sunni civilians and fighters from one area to another.
BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (AP) — Family members say they're still in shock over the death of a woman and her three young children in a Christmas fire in Southern California. Relatives say 34-year-old Maria De Los Angeles Bautista and her children, ages 6 months to 8 years old, died when their mobile home in Big Bear Lake caught fire the morning of Dec. 25. Their father, Jose Carlos, remains hospitalized with burns, cuts and smoke inhalation. Relatives say he's confused and in shock.
NEW DELHI (AP) — Cow dung is flying off the virtual shelves in India, and it's even being sold on Amazon and eBay. The patties — cow poop mixed with hay and dried in the sun — have long been available in India's villages. They've been used for centuries for fires, whether for heating, cooking or Hindu rituals.
