MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A local nonprofit is offering a new program to provide additional assistance to students with disabilities in Minot.

Rehab Services, Inc., created the Student Transition Program to help students with disabilities prepare for future success in employment, higher education and independent living. The program, which is funded by the North Dakota Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, aims to improve transition services for students ages 14 to 21 at Minot Public Schools.

Other components of the program include parent training, where adults can receive information on how to best support and prepare their children for the transition to adulthood.

Rehab Services assistant director Jay Klabunde tells the Minot Daily News (http://bit.ly/1Yyhhvx ) that the school district has a similar program, but it only covers developmental disabilities.

The Student Transition Program also covers learning, physical and mental disabilities.

Samantha Gores, transition specialist at Rehab Services, said the program started in November when they received funding for it.

"The program is to serve those who are underserved," she added.

Rehab Services and Minot Public Schools worked together to create the program, the contract for which will be yearly, Klabunde said.

"We're excited because this program is new and we're offering a new service to kids who haven't had this opportunity before," Klabunde said. "And it's a great partnership with Vocational Rehab, Minot Public Schools and Rehab Services."

Students who want to participate in the program can contact Rehab Services directly.
