NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Yale University has pledged to hire 1,000 New Haven residents over the next three years.
Yale President Peter Salovey says the employment of city residents is key to the university's efforts to accelerate local economic development.
Local unions expect a range of jobs to become available as the university plans construction of two new residential colleges to expand its undergraduate student body.
The agreement reached with Yale unions and a local nonprofit group calls for the university to focus hiring efforts in city neighborhoods with the highest rates of unemployment and poverty. The jobless rate for the city as a whole is around 9 percent.
The commitment expands on an earlier plan by Yale to hire 500 city residents within two years.
