POCATELLO, Idaho — An Idaho school cafeteria worker apparently fired after she gave a hungry student a free lunch has been offered her job back.

Dalene Bowden is the server at Irving Middle School who gave a hot meal to a 12-year-old girl with no lunch money who said she was hungry.

A termination letter from Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 cited theft as the reason for her termination.

However, in a statement, the district said it "does not and has not ever taken negative employment action against any food service worker due to a singular event of this nature."

The district also said, "in the spirit of the holidays...the district has been in communication with Ms. Bowden, extending an opportunity for her to return to employment."

No word yet from Bowden if she will accept.
