DETROIT (AP) — The latest on the shooting of an unarmed man by a suburban Detroit police officer (all times local):
12: 05 p.m.
The mother of an unarmed black man fatally shot by suburban Detroit police says her son had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic and wasn't a threat.
Valerie Johnson said Thursday that she and her family dispute police claims that her son, 35-year-old Kevin Matthews, was involved in a larceny in Dearborn that led to Wednesday's foot chase and shooting in Detroit.
Police have not confirmed that Matthews was the man involved in Wednesday's confrontation. Investigators say the man was shot after struggling with a Dearborn officer.
Detroit Chief James Craig says the officer suffered minor injuries and that his uniform was ripped during the struggle. Police said the dead man was sought on a misdemeanor warrant.
A police watchdog group is calling for the officer's suspension.

A watchdog group wants a suburban police officer who fatally shot an unarmed 35-year-old Detroit man to be suspended.
The Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality said Thursday that the suspension "is necessary until the facts" of the shooting "are known."
Police have not released the name of the man who was killed, saying only that a man sought in a theft in Dearborn was shot after struggling with an Dearborn officer after a foot chase on Detroit's west side.
Detroit Chief James Craig told reporters that the officer suffered minor injuries and that his uniform was ripped. Police said the dead man was sought on a misdemeanor warrant.
