RENO, Nev. (AP) — Fifteen years after U.S. regulators started assessing damage and health risks at an abandoned Nevada copper mine, the Environmental Protection Agency is moving to add the contaminated site to its Superfund National Priority List, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press. Rural neighbors of the World War II-era mine that has leaked toxic chemicals for decades won a $19.5 million settlement in 2013 from companies they accused of covering up the contamination — some of it radioactive — near Yerington about 65 miles southeast of Reno. The EPA sent a letter to Gov. Brian Sandoval this week announcing the agency's intention to place the mine on the list of the nation's most polluted sites.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Officials say the woman accused of intentionally crashing into pedestrians on the Las Vegas Strip still uses the name on the suspended Oregon driver's license obtained by police following her arrest. Records in Oregon show 24-year-old Lakeisha Nicole Holloway changed her name in October to Paris Paradise Morton. Her attorney says Holloway hasn't used the new name when he has spoken with her. Holloway is being held without bail.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Airport officials say 3.7 million travelers flew in and out of Las Vegas in November, an increase of 10 percent from the same month a year ago. McCarran International Airport statistics released show the destination's traffic by air is up more than 5 percent for the year with one month left. So far, 41.7 million arriving and departing passengers have used the airport this year.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Unemployment rates are either holding steady or ticking up in Nevada's three main metropolitan areas. The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported this week that Las Vegas' jobless rate remained flat at 6.3 percent in November. The rate rose to 5.7 percent in the Reno area, and up to 6.8 percent in Carson City.
