LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ja'Dante' Frye scored 21 points, including a go-ahead 3-point play, and Nicholls State ended a four-game losing streak with an 84-81 victory over Hampton on Tuesday at the Las Vegas Classic.
After Frye's 3-point play, T.J. Carpenter, who finished with 19 points, added a 3-pointer for an 80-74 lead with 1:36 to play. Hampton (4-6) ran off the next four points to cut the lead to one with 29 seconds to go. But Carpenter made two more from the line, and after Hampton's Brian Darden scored, Jonathan Bell added two final free throws with nine seconds left. A 3-point try by Reginald Johnson missed at the buzzer.
Liam Thomas added 11 points for the Colonels (4-7).
Quinton Chievous led the Pirates with 28 points and 14 rebounds with Darden adding 21 points. Johnson, Hampton's leading scorer this season, was just 3 of 14 and finished with seven points.
